Shipping containers aren’t only for shipping. When they’ve reached the end of their life transporting goods across Australia or across the world, they can easily be repurposed for a variety of other projects. From cabins, to granny flats, offices, and even swimming pools; the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
Having a backyard swimming pool is the Australian dream, however underground ones can be cost-prohibitive and above ground ones can be unsightly. That’s why repurposing a shipping container can be a great solution. Not only are they cost-effective, their industrial style provides a modern look and become a statement piece of your garden. In this blog, we cover the steps you’d need to take to build a swimming pool from a shipping container.
1. Start planning your swimming pool
Planning is the most important step to any infrastructure project. You will need to contact your local council to investigate any regulations, such as fencing requirements, and source the appropriate permits.
Next think about your shipping container. Does it need to be reinforced? They generally don’t start off as completely watertight, so you may need to add additional layers on the inside. It’s also important to make certain it can hold the weight of all the water.
2. Making modifications to your shipping container
Once you’ve completed all the planning, it’s time to start making the modifications. If you’ve cut the container to size, be sure to cover all the sharp edges. Once again, triple-check that the structure is watertight otherwise you could end up with a large empty container in your background instead of an awesome looking pool. Be sure to treat the metal for rust as well, and paint both the inside and outside.
Lastly, don’t forget to add the finishing touches, such as pumps, filters, steps and side decking. One cool idea we recommend is adding a glass window to the side to view the depths of the pool.
3. Time to organise your pool party
Once you’ve finished, it’s time to test it out! Fill your new pool up, add some chlorine or salt mix (whichever you prefer) and invite everyone around to show off your new investment!
